How the Welsh celebrate true love
January 25th is St Dwynwen’s Day in Wales, celebrating our patron saint of love.
The story of Saint Dwynwen has been passed down the generations by word-of-mouth, through poems and songs, tied together by Welsh folklore. There are lots of versions that have survived the test of time but most begin with Dwynwen’s failed romance and end with her dedicating her life to God and lovers everywhere.
Dwynwen was famous for building a convent on Ynys Llanddwyn – one of the most beautiful, secluded spots on Ynys Môn – which you can still visit to this day.
Her name means, ‘she who leads a blessed life’.
How to celebrate someone you love this St Dwywen’s day:
Visit Ynys Llanddwyn
This tiny, storybook picture of an island is incredibly special. Visit the ruins of Dwynwen’s convent, peak at the ancient well, and admire the regular seal visitors in the surrounding sea. Make sure you check the tides as it’s notoriously easy to get stranded on this island!
Cook something Welsh
There’s no better way to let someone know you care than cooking up something warming, comforting and delicious. Try our deeply chocolatey, clementine and sea salt Welsh cakes or this smoky Welsh rarebit.
Send a card or gift
It’s an excuse to spoil people you love with cards, Welsh flowers like the early daffodils or some promising bulbs, a handmade Ynys Llanddwyn mug or our Pink Llanddwyn ceramic jar. We’ve even captured the scent of Llanddwyn in a candle.
Spread some joy
Dwynwen is known for her saying ‘nothing wins hearts like cheerfulness’, something we need more than ever this January.
