We are proud to join the B Corp community

WHAT IS B-CORP?

Certified B Corporations, in the simplest of terms, are businesses that meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose. We are incredibly proud to join this community this July.

Halen Môn has always put the environment at its heart, after all, we rely on clean seas for our main ingredient. This is an unambiguous and rigorous certification. It has made us look at all aspects of our business, now and going forward.

It has shown us how much more there is to do. It’s not something you ‘get’ and then put to one side. It’s something that underpins everything we do. It sits proudly alongside our Grade AA BRC and our Protected Designation of Origin.

I am proud of what Halen Môn has achieved and grateful to my team; especially to Beth who has put the hours into the application.’’  – Alison Lea-Wilson, Managing Director and co-founder

In short, B Corp represents everything we value at Halen Môn. The B stands for ‘benefit for all’, and these certified businesses are accelerating a global culture shift to redefine success in business and build a more inclusive and sustainable economy.

Society’s most challenging problems cannot be solved by government and non-profits alone. The B Corp community works toward reduced inequality, lower levels of poverty, a healthier environment, stronger communities, and the creation of more high-quality jobs with dignity and purpose.

B Corps form a community of leaders and drive a global movement of people using business as a force for good.

WHY DO WE WANT TO BE ONE?

‘B Corp is not just a certificate, it recognises the culture and ethos of who we are. It has taken ten months to go through the rigorous verification process, covering governance, sustainability, how we support our staff and our community’ – Beth Tasker, General Manager @ Halen Môn

Every product bearing our logo celebrates quality and the incredible isle of Anglesey that we are lucky enough to call home. Halen Môn exists because of our incredible natural resources, so it makes sense that sustainability has genuinely always been at our very core.

The company remains family owned and we act with social responsibility to be a force for good in all aspects of business and the wider community. We champion the brilliant staff we have, committing to pay above the Living Wage and providing professional, social and wellbeing support. Our business culture is of the utmost importance to us.

Ultimately, being at the centre of our community, and standing up for good, clean, fair food, with as little environmental impact as possible, is why we’re in business.

These are the foundations of Halen Môn and they will not change. But there are some things we want to change as the founders carefully hand over to the next generation.

  • Sustainable growth and continuous progression are crucial to us, and that means safeguarding existing jobs for future generations on this small Welsh island. We want to create new jobs as well as new opportunities for our team.
  • We want to drive our business towards a more sustainable future. This means being accountable and transparent, and improving in a measurable way every year. We move closer to our objective of zero to landfill every year by applying the principles of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle to all ‘waste’ and coproducts.
  • We want to be even more innovative: with flavours, with products, with packaging, with sourcing, with food education. We also want to create more partnerships with cooks, chefs and companies, who share our ethos and our commitment to natural food production.

B Corp is a continual programme of improvement. To maintain the certification we must continue to get better and we are absolutely committed to that.

Since B Lab was founded in 2006, over 200,000 businesses have taken the B Impact Assessment; 20,000 have applied for B Corp certification; only 6,400 (1,200 in the UK) are certified.

We would like to thank our team, especially Beth who has led on this project, and also Lauren and everyone at the Cluster who have helped us with support from the Welsh Government. We are proud that Wales is leading the way on this.

‘’We started our business because we love the landscape of Wales, wanted to create local jobs within the community, and to make products that make life more delicious, with as little environmental impact as possible. Ultimately, B Corp formalises for us a lot of the things we have always seen as very important.‘’  –
