The science behind why seaweed is good for your skin

by | Aug 14, 2025

After welcoming thousands of visitors to our wild seaweed barrels, we’re used to the glowing reports of what seaweed can do for you – from helping people sleep better, to soothing sore muscles after a lot of exercise.

Research shows that these marine plants are packed with bioactive compounds, antioxidants, and minerals that work wonders for skin health.

Here are four scientifically supported reasons why seaweed deserves a place in your skincare routine.

1. Seaweed hydrates and strengthens the skin barrier

Seaweeds contain polysaccharides (natural sugars) that draw water into the skin and lock it there, just like a good moisturiser will do. The natural sugars form a protective film over the skin, reducing water loss and keeping skin looking plump and smooth.

2. Algae provides some antioxidant protection

Marine algaes are a wonderful source of polyphenols which help defend skin cells from damage caused by pollution and UV exposure. This is thought to slow visible signs of aging such as fine lines. (You should still always use an SPF!)

3. Brown seaweeds boost collagen production

Some brown seaweeds, such as fucus serratus, which is the seaweed we use in our Wild Seaweed Baths, have been shown to stimulate collagen production, supporting skin firmness and reducing the appearance of wrinkles.

4. Calms redness and skin irritation

Seaweed is naturally anti-inflammatory, thanks to compounds such as fucoidan and phlorotannins. These soothe skin flare-ups and support conditions like eczema, psoriasis and rosacea by reducing redness and irritation.
