Smokery Questions - Halen Môn

Our new Halen Môn Smokery project – your questions answered

We’ve just announced a new project here on our site in Anglesey as construction gets underway on a new smokery building.

You can read more about the news here.

If you’re looking for more information, we’ve gathered together some questions and answers that we hope will be helpful. If you have a question that we haven’t answered here, please get in touch.

What are you building?

We’re building a new single-storey smokery building which will house production, packaging and storage facilities.

We have worked with architects and engineers to plan a facility that sits lightly on the site, with low visual impact, while giving us a modern and efficient facility to support a sustainable future.

What’s new about this project?

This project enables us to bring our current smokers together into a single new building. With everything under one roof, the new smokery will offer improved operational efficiency, increased capacity and can support future product development and innovation.

As part of the investment in a more efficient facility, we are also bringing in a large electrostatic precipitator (ESP) which will have a significant impact in minimising smoke being released from the chimneys.

Solar panels will also be installed on the roof, adding to our recent installation of a 100kw solar electricity system on the site.

How are you managing smoke from the new building?

The technology installed in the current smokery already enables us to operate well within the Welsh Air Quality Standards, and the voluntary Air Quality Guidelines set by the World Health Organisation.

The ESP (electrostatic precipitator) technology which will be installed in the new smokery, will have a further significant impact in minimising smoke being released from the chimneys.

Why are you building this now?

We have been planning this for some time and were granted planning permission for the new smokery in 2022. As we’ve recently confirmed the funding required to go ahead with the project, we can now start work on site in October 2024.

How long will the construction project be?

The construction project will start on site in October 2024 with an estimated timeline of around five months to completion. On completion, the new building will replace the existing smokery which will be removed from the site.

Halen Mon does not anticipate any major disruption locally during construction and will be keeping its neighbours informed about the work for the duration of the project.

How are you engaging with the community?
We are keeping all our neighbours informed about the project through a mix of letters and face-to-face meetings. We are also happy to be contacted directly with any questions about the construction project. Email generalmanager@halenmon.com or use the form on this page.
What products will you be making?

Our artisan smokery business began in 2008 with smoked sea salt, and has since developed to produce other ingredients including a range of condiments and our Great Taste award-winning Oak Smoked Water.

We are a BRCGS-accredited supplier to the major UK supermarkets, and our smoked products are popular with home cooks, manufacturers and top restaurants.
