The ancient tradition of seaweed bathing
A little history
Long before the arrival of modern skincare, coastal communities were turning to the sea for its restorative qualities.
The practice of thalassotherapy, from the Greek word thalassa, meaning sea, dates back centuries, with the ancient Romans among those who recognised the pleasures of bathing in mineral-rich waters.
Seaweed bathing became particularly popular along the west coast of Ireland during the nineteenth century. Traditional bathhouses sprang up in seaside towns, offering visitors the chance to soak in warm seawater filled with freshly gathered seaweed. By the Victorian era, seaweed baths had become a much-loved part of coastal life, valued for their soothing qualities and the wonderfully soft feeling they left on the skin.
The ritual itself is beautifully simple. When immersed in warm water, seaweed releases a silky, slippery gel, rich in naturally occurring marine compounds. The water takes on an almost luxurious texture, coating the skin and leaving it feeling soft and nourished. And, of course, there's the pleasure of doing very little for a while.
Bringing the tradition to Anglesey
Our own love affair with seaweed bathing began when Halen Môn founders Alison and David first bathed in seaweed themselves. They were amazed at feeling thoroughly rejuvenated, and were determined to share the benefits with anyone would listen.
Today, we offer Wild Môn Seaweed Baths at Halen Môn, where guests can sink into their own warm outdoor barrel bath, surrounded by seaweed, with views across the Menai Strait towards the mountains of Eryri.
There's something rather magical about bathing outdoors in the elements. Whether the sun is shining or the Welsh rain is coming down, it's a chance to stop, take in the landscape and enjoy the simple pleasure of warm water and fresh sea air.
We've welcomed thousands of guests to experience the baths, many of whom tell us how wonderfully soft their skin feels afterwards, or how deeply relaxed they feel.

From our seaweed baths to your bathroom
The experience of seaweed bathing was one of the inspirations behind Wild Môn, our natural skincare range rooted in the coastal landscape of Ynys Môn.
We wanted to capture some of the pleasure of those outdoor baths and make it part of everyday life, even when a trip to Anglesey isn't on the cards.
- Our Wild Seaweed Bath-in-a-Box is perhaps the closest you can get to the original ritual. Filled with organic dried seaweed, it transforms an ordinary bath into a deeply comforting soak. Simply add the seaweed to warm water and allow it to soften, releasing its naturally occurring marine goodness.
- For a slightly different take on the tradition, our Seaweed Bath Elixir combines mineral-rich bladderwrack extract with nourishing plant oils and a soothing blend of lavender, geranium and eucalyptus essential oils. A few pipettes added to warm running water turn an ordinary evening bath into something a little more special.
- We've also brought seaweed into our Magic Sleep Balm with Seaweed, combining marine extract with botanical oils and calming scents to create a gentle bedtime ritual.
Our products are designed with a particular appreciation for skin that changes over time, especially when it becomes drier and needs a little extra nourishment and care.
Seaweed bathing has been enjoyed for generations, and we hope it continues to be for many more.
Sometimes the oldest ideas are still the best.
