10 deliciously unexpected ways to use Popeth

Based on the American “everything” bagel seasoning (“Popeth” is Welsh for everything), our Popeth seasoning is savoury and gently warming, without being hot. The key to extracting the most flavour is to gently toast the seasoning in a dry frying pan (as you might do with whole spices), which will release the aromatic oils and dial up the savouriness.

While you can absolutely sprinkle Popeth on bagels before baking, here we’ve put together are a few more ideas to show how versatile Popeth is in the kitchen:

  1. After toasting, sprinkle a teaspoon of Popeth onto fried, poached or scrambled eggs.
  2. Mix through savoury biscuit doughs. It’s particularly good in a cheese shortbread.
  3. Toss through torn chunks of bread before roasting with plenty of olive oil into extra savoury croutons. Great tossed through salads, or for adding crunch to soups.

  1. Stir through softened butter, and use to top steaming hot corn on the cob; steak; chicken; or green vegetables.
  2. Coat raw nuts or seeds with a scant pour of olive oil and toss to make sure every nut and or seed is glistening (this will also help the seasoning to stick to each and every piece). Sprinkle over a generous amount of Popeth, toss to combine, then roast in an oven heated to 160°C for about 20-25 minutes (seeds will roast more quickly), until golden throughout.
  3. Sprinkle a heaped tablespoon over root vegetables just before roasting for extra crunch and warmth. It’s particularly delicious with carrots.
  4. Make a coleslaw by combining thinly sliced celery, apple, red onion and mayonnaise (or however you prefer it), and sprinkle over some Popeth while you toss everything together.
  1. Add a tablespoon of un-toasted Popeth to just-about-smoking hot oil so it sizzles immediately. Remove from the heat and pour over soups, dahls or stews straight away.
  2. Combine into bread and flatbread doughs before cooking in a hot frying pan or the oven.
  3. After running a lemon wedge around the rim of a clean glass, invert the glass into a saucer of Popeth before filling with ice, vodka, tomato juice, Worcestershire sauce and tobacco for a next-level Bloody Mary. Don’t forget to season it with a pinch of Halen Môn Pure Sea Salt.
